Lecture: Introduction to Animal Portraiture Using Raw Edge Applique, with Josh Chernoff

  • September 05, 2024
  • 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Lutheran Church of the Ascension

Raw edge appliqué is a wonderful   technique to create naturalistic portraits of animals and people, and to create landscape scenery in fabric. For experienced and newer quilters, it can be a liberating extension of their skills in planning and executing visual images in fabric. This lecture will review how the combination of fabric collage with quilting and thread painting techniques can create expressive images.

Josh has been quilting and doing other textile arts for 35 years, often using batiks and upcycled fabrics from menswear (cotton, silk, woven woolens). He does both modern functional quilts, and art quilts, with a special focus on a raw edge applique technique. This lends itself well to animal portraiture. “I use quilting as a way to closely observe the world around me”. He plays with color, texture, and dimensions to create beautiful things and connect with other people. He also collects and restores vintage sewing machines.
